You enter on the bedroom floor. There are three bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, and in two of them a folded sucupira stair climbs to a mezzanine under the concrete roof, where the gables become skylights. Below is the garden level and the life of the house: a kitchen, a dining room, two long galleries on either side of the courtyard, a living room lined with shelves. Lower still is a spa with a steel plunge pool and a steam room, floored in Lioz.

The palette is short, and nothing in it is there to decorate. Sucupira, a dense Brazilian hardwood that warms to honey, on floors, stairs and slatted walls. Concrete left as it came out of the formwork, the grain of the boards still printed on the ceilings. Terracotta made by hand in the Algarve, laid in herringbone. White tiles from Azulima, and red ones from Viúva Lamego, the factory that began a few streets away. The clay has come back to the neighbourhood.

The house was not given a garden. It was built around one.

The patio was sunk one level below the street and left open to the sky, and the chimney rises out of it among a tree, banana palms and a long bench of pink Lioz. Light comes in from above and works its way down: into the bedrooms through deep bays lined in timber, into the living rooms through glass walls that slide away completely, into the spa through narrow light wells.

The Factory and the Courtyard — Casa da Fábrica by atelier bugio . joão favila menezes

From the street you would not know it was there. A white wall, a row of saw-tooth gables, a lane that ends.

Then, above the rooftops, a brick chimney. It belonged to a factory, one of the last workshops to fill the gaps of Anjos, and it now stands at the centre of a courtyard house in the middle of Lisbon, designed by João Favila Menezes and Atelier Bugio.

Elvas World Heritage Site. MELLOS JOSÉS PALACE 1760

The palace is especially interesting because it illustrates the intersection of three histories of Elvas: The military city, The aristocratic Melo families and Eighteenth-century aristocratic architecture. The building is locally described as a Palácio Pombalino, although its decorative language also has strong late-Baroque/Rococo characteristics.

CASAL RIBA TEJO. Tagus River views

Beyond the architecture, the estate reveals its greatest strength outdoors. A seven by seven metre swimming pool, outdoor kitchen, dining areas, terraces, olive grove, fig orchard, vegetable garden and open pasture unfold naturally across the landscape, each carefully positioned to embrace the remarkable views over the Tagus.

From the gardens to the highest terraces, the visual connection with the river is never lost. The property also benefits from access to the river, allowing moments of kayaking, paddleboarding or simply walking to the water’s edge. Located just ten kilometres from Abrantes and approximately ninety minutes from Lisbon, Casal Riba Tejo offers a rare opportunity to own a riverfront estate where architecture, landscape and the Tagus exist in complete harmony.

MELLOS JOSÉS PALACE. Elvas UNESCO World Patrimony

The building is therefore quite different from the more austere military architecture for which Elvas is famous. It represents the aristocratic residential architecture of 18th-century Elvas, when wealthy families expressed their status through urban palaces and solares.

MELLOS JOSÉS PALACE. Elvas UNESCO World Patrimony

The archives places the building in the history of the Melo e Lacerda family of Elvas, described as a family of military men who held morgados (entailed estates) in the Alentejo.

This is consistent with independent genealogical and archival evidence. The Anuário da Nobreza de Portugal specifically lists “Mello e Lacerda de Brederode, de Elvas” as a branch of the Portuguese nobility.

There are also records in the Arquivo Histórico Militar for members of the Melo e Lacerda de Brederode family. For example, António Xavier de Melo e Lacerda de Brederode (born 1829) is recorded as a colonel, demonstrating the family’s continuing military associations into the 19th century.

MELLOS JOSÉS PALACE. Elvas UNESCO World Patrimony

The building stands in the historic centre, at the beginning of Rua de São Francisco, near the junction with Rua Tenente Passos Manuel. A local heritage source describes it as an 18th-century building with a ground floor and noble first floor, a prominent central balcony with wrought-iron railing, and six additional marble-framed windows.

One of its most distinctive features is the Mello coat of arms on the central pediment. It is topped by an eagle with outspread wings. A marble medallion on the corner reportedly bears the initials “A M” and the date 1760, providing an important clue to the building’s chronology.
