Our favourite seat in the Old Town apartment is not the sofa.
It is the green nook: a rattan chair by the window, wrapped in plants.
There are 10 of them across the flat, keeping you company between beach days.
All on a quiet street in the historic Old Town, right among the cafés.

Autumn in the inner Algarve means strawberry trees in fruit.

The fruit takes about a year to ripen, so it hangs on the branch in autumn right alongside next year's flowers.
Pliny the Elder is said to have tasted one and declared "unum tantum edo": I eat only one. The tree's Latin name, Arbutus unedo, comes from that line.
Most of the crop becomes medronho, the local fruit brandy. Many bottles sit around 48%, so go gently.

Lagos once ran on sardines, brine and a factory siren.

Until the First World War, Lagos was the Algarve's biggest canning centre. At the 1925 peak, up to 29 canneries were working here at once.
When the boats came in, the siren called the workers, mostly women, often through the night.
The last Lagos cannery closed in 1986. The tiled sardine on every souvenir shelf in town is its quiet monument.

Lagos has been a salt town for two thousand years.

Under Rua Silva Lopes in the Old Town, archaeologists found a Roman fish-salting complex of 15 tanks, in use from the 1st century AD to the mid 6th century.
Just east of town, the old Salinas de Odiáxere on the Ria de Alvor are largely abandoned now, and they have become one of the best spots in Lagos for watching waterbirds.
The hand-raked tradition lives on in Tavira, where coarse salt and flor de sal have been EU protected since 2013.

The whole story is in our latest Layers of Lagos post.
