MEET DAN — THE HEART BEHIND 45 BROWN STREET
Daniel “Dan” Dawson arrived at 45 Brown Street from Tōwai in Northland when he was seven or eight years old. He remained here for almost 90 years, until his passing at 96.
A builder by trade, Dan apprenticed with Fletcher Construction during Auckland’s early state-house building years. But neighbours remember his generosity most.
He shared vegetables from his garden with local businesses and spent years caring for the grounds at the nearby A’oga Fa’a Samoa early childhood centre, never accepting payment—only handmade cards and waiata from the children.
Rugby league was his lifelong passion. A Ponsonby Rugby League Club member and devoted Warriors supporter, Dan travelled by bus and train to Mount Smart well into his nineties.
When Warriors players and coaches walked past his Brown Street home, Dan was never short of advice about what they should—or shouldn’t—be doing. For his 90th birthday, the entire Warriors team signed a card for him.
Now, after almost a century in the same ownership, Dan’s much-loved home awaits its next chapter.
Restore it. Reinvent it. Or create something the street will talk about.
