Last week, Sander and Paula represented Schmidt Global Relocations at IAM and PAIMA in San Diego, joining partners and colleagues from across the international moving industry.

| Silvia's story

When Silvia Folch packed her bags and moved to the Netherlands in mid-2022, she stepped into a new chapter filled with unfamiliar customs, new experiences, and plenty of opportunities to grow.
Like many expats, Silvia quickly discovered that settling into a new country is about much more than finding your way around. It's about learning to see the world through a different lens, embracing new traditions, and finding a sense of belonging in a place that once felt completely unfamiliar.

In January 2023, she joined the Schmidt family, bringing with her not only professional expertise but also a firsthand understanding of the expat experience that so many of our clients navigate every day.

Looking back on her own journey, Silvia's advice is simple but powerful:
"Keep an open mind. Every country is different, with different ways and traditions. Try to accept them and be respectful, even when you don't agree. Don't let culture shock ruin your experience."

It's a reminder that some of the most rewarding parts of living abroad come from embracing the differences rather than resisting them. Every challenge, every new tradition, and every cultural surprise becomes part of the story.

How can we minimise delays at destination?

A question closely linked to both timing and client experience: What helps keep deliveries on track once a shipment arrives?

In our experience, delays are often not caused by transport, but by readiness at destination.
Important factors include:
- Client availability for delivery
- Access to the property
- Completed documentation
- Local registration (where applicable)

What helps avoid delays?
- Early alignment with the client
- Clear scheduling between partners
- Confirming all requirements before arrival

When all elements come together, deliveries can move forward efficiently and without additional handling or storage. It’s the combination of logistics and preparation that makes relocations successful.

Transit times in Europe – short-distance zones

A question we often receive from partners:
What are realistic transit times for shorter-distance European relocations? To support accurate planning, we work with a structured zone-based transit time matrix.

📍 Zone 1–3
👉 1 to 4 weeks (after customs clearance)

Zone 1: The Netherlands
Zone 2: Belgium & Germany
Zone 3: Austria, Croatia, Denmark, France (above Basel), Monaco, Switzerland, UK (above Manchester)

Why this matters
Even within shorter-distance lanes, timelines depend on:
- Cross-border coordination
- Local delivery access
- Scheduling availability

Using defined zones helps set realistic expectations from the start.

Can clients include alcohol in their shipment to Europe?

A question we regularly receive from partners:
Can clients include liquor or alcohol in their household goods shipment?

The short answer:
👉 Yes, this is possible, but it requires careful planning.

What we typically see
A small quantity of alcohol for personal use is generally not an issue, provided it is clearly declared. However, regulations can vary depending on the destination country within Europe, and requirements are often stricter than expected.

What is important to consider
To avoid complications, we strongly recommend:
✔ Sharing full details of the alcohol before shipment, including:
- Type of alcohol
- Quantity
- Alcohol percentage
✔Aligning early with the destination agent on country-specific requirements

What happens if this is not aligned?
Depending on the destination, the shipment may need to be:
- Formally cleared at destination
- Subject to duties and taxes
- Handled by specialised clearance partners

This can result in:
- Additional costs
- Longer clearance timelines
- Potential delivery delays

Our recommendation
Early transparency and coordination make a significant difference. With the right information upfront, we can:
- Assess feasibility
- Provide clear guidance
- Support a smooth and compliant import process

Yesterday, our South African team came together to celebrate Heritage Day by sharing a little taste of home.

The office was filled with an amazing variety of traditional favourites, including butter chicken, vetkoek, biltong, samoosas, pastries, desserts, and many other delicious dishes. More than just a feast, the day was a celebration of the diverse cultures, traditions, and stories that make South Africa so unique.

What's on my desk? | Move Manager Edition

Behind every successful move is a Move Manager with a desk full of essentials!
☕ A never-ending cup of tea to power through time zones, shipments, and client calls.
🌿 An easy-care plant helping us bring a little calm and greenery into busy days.
🖼️ A special photo frame that welcomed us to our new office with the message "Welcome to your new home". Some of us have since filled it with treasured family photos, making our workspaces feel even more personal.
💻 Headsets, laptops, planners, sticky notes, and plenty of organisation keep relocations moving smoothly around the globe.
Every desk is a little different, but the goal is the same: helping individuals and families feel at home wherever their journey takes them.

Holiday shipping: The countdown starts sooner than you think

Christmas may feel far away, but for international household goods shipments, the festive season often arrives well before December.

As carriers, ports, warehouses, and customs authorities begin preparing for year-end schedules, shipping capacity can tighten and flexibility becomes increasingly important.
What we're already discussing with clients:
✔️ Earlier packing and loading dates
✔️ Destination holiday schedules
✔️ Customs and delivery timeframes
✔️ Backup plans for critical move dates

Partner Insight: The smoothest year-end moves are usually the ones that start being planned before the holiday rush begins. A conversation in September can help avoid challenges in December.

How far in advance do your clients typically start planning their year-end relocations?
