THE GIRL WHO HEARD THE DRUMS 🇬🇭👻
EPISODE 2: THE DOOR THAT MUST NEVER OPEN
At exactly 12:07 AM, the drums stopped.
But nobody in Nana Akua’s house went back to sleep.
Abena stood in the corridor, staring at her mother.
“Mummy, what did Grandma mean when she said I was never supposed to be born?”
Her mother wiped her tears.
“Abena, please. Not tonight.”
“Not tonight? You brought me to this village, a strange girl is standing outside my window, and Grandma is screaming inside a locked room! You better explain!”
Suddenly, three loud knocks came from Nana Akua’s bedroom.
KNOCK.
KNOCK.
KNOCK.
“Akosua!” Nana Akua shouted from inside. “Take that girl away from this house!”
Abena’s mother grabbed her hand.
“We’re leaving.”
She pulled Abena towards the front door.
But when she opened it, she froze.
The little girl in the red dress was standing outside.
Barefoot.
Her head was tilted to one side.
And she was smiling.
Abena’s mother slammed the door shut.
“Jesus Christ!”
“Mummy, who IS she?”
Her mother said nothing.
Then, from the other side of the door, the little girl spoke.
“Auntie Akosua, why did you leave me?”
Abena turned slowly towards her mother.
“Auntie?”
Her mother covered her mouth.
The little girl began knocking.
“Open the door, Auntie. I’m cold.”
Abena’s mother backed away.
“Don’t listen to her,” she whispered.
“But she knows you!”
“ABENA, GO TO YOUR ROOM!”
Abena had never seen her mother look so frightened.
She ran upstairs.
But instead of entering her room, she stopped outside Nana Akua’s bedroom.
The door was old, dark, and covered in strange markings.
From inside, her grandmother whispered.
“Abena?”
“Grandma?”
“Come closer, my child. I need to tell you something before she finds out.”
Abena pressed her ear against the door.
“Who is she?”
There was a long silence.
Then Nana Akua spoke.
“She is the reason your mother ran away from this village seventeen years ago.”
Abena’s heart began racing.
“Why?”
Before Nana Akua could answer, a loud crash came from downstairs.
Then silence.
Abena turned around.
At the end of the corridor stood her mother.
Except something was wrong.
Her mother’s clothes were soaked, as if she had been standing in heavy rain.
Her face was expressionless.
And in her right hand, she held a little red shoe.
Abena stared at it.
“Mummy?”
Her mother slowly raised her head.
“Abena, who have you been talking to?”
Abena looked back at the bedroom door.
Then she heard her grandmother’s voice from inside.
“DON’T TURN AROUND, ABENA!”
But it was too late.
Someone behind her whispered directly into her ear.
“Found you.”
