Latest News on the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway

As of 14 October 2026, the Federal Government says the highway project has not been abandoned, but changes to parts of its route have caused controversy.

1. What is happening?

The Nigerian government is building a major road called the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway. It is planned to connect Lagos to Calabar through several states in southern Nigeria.

Recently, there has been a disagreement about the route the road should follow in some areas.

2. What has the government decided?

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, says President Bola Tinubu approved using parts of the existing East-West Road for the highway’s continuation between the Ondo and Edo areas.

The government says this will help address flooding and avoid some difficult areas where building a new road would be challenging.

3. Has the government cancelled the coastal highway?

No, according to the Minister of Works.

He says the original 750-kilometre coastal highway project will continue. The government also plans to reconstruct about 400 kilometres of the existing East-West Road.

However, the exact arrangements for connecting these routes have become a subject of public debate.

4. Why are some people complaining?

Some people are worried that changing the route could prevent certain coastal communities from benefiting from the road.

They want the government to explain why the changes are necessary and whether the new route will still help the communities the highway was originally intended to serve.
