*AI PROMPT ENGINEERING*

*Meaning of Prompt Engineering*
Prompt Engineering is the skill of creating clear and effective instructions that guide an AI system to produce a desired response or result.

In simple terms, prompt engineering means knowing how to communicate with AI effectively.

Example of a Weak Prompt
_*«“Explain AI.”»*_
This is broad and does not tell the AI what level, purpose, or format is required.

Example of a Strong Prompt
*_«“Explain Artificial Intelligence to a 14-year-old student using simple English and three everyday examples.”»_*

The second prompt is more effective because it clearly identifies the topic, audience, language, and expected content.

*Why Prompt Engineering Matters*
Prompt Engineering is important because it helps users get better, clearer, and more relevant results from AI.

It helps to:
- Improve the quality and accuracy of AI responses.
- Save time by reducing unnecessary corrections.
- Control the tone, length, style, and format of the response.
- Make AI useful for specific professional and educational tasks.
- Improve productivity, creativity, and problem-solving.

Better prompts generally lead to better directed outputs.

*Types of Prompts*
Some common types of prompts include:

1. Instruction Prompt:
Tells AI exactly what to do. E.g. Summarise this passage in 100 words.

2. Question Prompt:
Ask AI for specific information. E.g. What are the benefits of renewable energy?

3. Role-Based Prompt:
Assigns a specific role or expertise to AI. E g. Act as an experienced Mathematics teacher and explain quadratic equations.

4. Context-Based Prompt:
Provides background information to help AI understand the task. E.g. The learners are 13-year-old students with average mathematical ability. Explain fractions using simple examples.”»

5. Example-Based Prompt:
Provides examples to show AI the expected pattern or style. E.g Rewrite ‘Give me the report’ as a polite professional statement.

*Common Prompting Mistakes*
Users often get poor AI responses because of poorly designed prompts. Common mistakes include:

- Being too vague: “Tell me about education.”
- Giving insufficient context: Not explaining the purpose or audience.
- Using unclear instructions: Giving AI ambiguous or conflicting directions.
- Overloading one prompt: Combining too many unrelated tasks.
- Not specifying the output: Failing to state whether the response should be a table, essay, list, or presentation.
- Failing to refine the response: Accepting the first answer without reviewing or improving it.
- Trusting AI blindly: Not checking important facts or information.

Clear input produces better direction, but AI outputs should still be reviewed and verified.

*The 5-Part Prompt Formula*
An effective prompt can be structured using five key components:

ROLE + TASK + CONTEXT + REQUIREMENTS + OUTPUT FORMAT

1. *Role* – Who should AI act as?
E.g. Act as an experienced secondary school teacher…

2. *Task* – What should AI do?
E.g. Prepare a lesson note on linear equations…

3. *Context* – What background information does AI need?
E g. For 13–14-year-old Nigerian students…

4. *Requirements* – What specific conditions should be followed?
E.g. Use simple English, practical examples, and five assessment questions…

5. *Output Format* – How should the answer be presented?
E.g. Present it under clear headings and bullet points.

Complete Example
_Act as an experienced secondary school Mathematics teacher. Prepare a lesson note on simple linear equations for 13–14 years old Nigerian students. Use simple English, practical examples, worked examples, and five assessment questions. Present the lesson under clear headings._

This formula makes a prompt clear, specific, contextual, and purposeful.

*Conclusion*
Prompt Engineering is the art of communicating effectively with Artificial Intelligence. It involves giving AI clear instructions, relevant context, specific requirements, and a desired output format.

Mastering prompt engineering can improve how individuals use AI for learning, teaching, research, business, creativity, communication, and problem-solving.

*STORYTELLING WITH DATA WRITTEN BY COLE NUSSBAUMER KNAFLIC*

*Review of Chapter 8: _Pulling It All Together_*

Chapter 8 of Storytelling with Data brings together the major lessons from the earlier chapters, showing how they work as one complete process. The author uses a real world example involving the prices of five competing products: A, B, C, D and E, to demonstrate how raw data can be transformed into a clear story that supports decision making.

*The 6-Step Process*

1. *Understand the Context Before creating a chart*

Ask the following questions:
Who is my audience?
What do I want them to know or do?
What data will help me communicate this?

The purpose is not simply to display data but to communicate something meaningful.

2. *Choose the Right Visual*
The visual should match the message. In the chapter's pricing example, a line graph is more suitable because the objective is to understand how prices change over time.

3. *Remove Clutter*
Unnecessary borders, gridlines, excessive colours and complicated legends can distract the audience. The author recommends simplifying the graph and directly labelling the lines so the audience can understand the information easily.

4. *Direct Attention*
Not every part of the data is equally important. Use colour, markers and other visual techniques to highlight the important findings. For example, the chapter highlights the introduction of Product C and the subsequent price changes.

5. *Think Like a Designer*
A good visual should be designed around its purpose. The author emphasizes that visual should be created in a way that makes it easy for the audience to understand and use the information. Text, alignment and accessibility also matter.

6. *Tell the Story*
Finally, the analyst must connect the findings into a logical story. In the example, the presentation moves from the original prices of the products, through their changes over time, to the final recommendation that a new product should be introduced within the $150–$200 range to remain competitive.

*The Main Lesson*
_The most important message from Chapter 8 is that: A data analyst should not merely show data. The analyst should explain what the data means and what decision it supports._

*Take Home Message*
“Chapter 8 teaches us to bring everything together.

▪️First, understand your audience and purpose.

▪️ Second, choose the right chart.

▪️Third, remove unnecessary information.

▪️Fourth, highlight the important findings.

▪️Fifth, design the visual for easy understanding.

▪️ Finally, tell a clear story that leads to a useful decision.

Therefore, successful data analysis is not just about numbers, it is about communicating what the numbers mean and helping people make better decisions.
