There’s a reason Nigerians don’t easily trust real estate agents anymore.
And honestly, you can’t blame them.
For many people, finding a house isn’t just “house hunting.”
It’s months of saving.
It’s money borrowed from family.
It’s salary that was supposed to handle food, transport, school fees and other responsibilities.
Then you finally find a place that looks perfect.
You call the agent.
“Pay for inspection.”
You pay.
“Someone else is interested. You need to act fast.”
You rush.
Then another fee appears.
Agency fee.
Agreement fee.
Caution fee.
Service charge.
Legal fee.
And somehow, the house that looked affordable on the listing now costs almost twice what you budgeted.
And that’s if the house is even real.
There are people who have paid for properties they never got.
People who inspected one house and were later taken to another.
People who discovered that the person collecting money wasn't actually authorised to rent the property.
People who were shown beautiful pictures online, only to discover that the reality was completely different.
And the worst part?
When something goes wrong, the renter is often the one left carrying the loss.
This is why the problem isn't simply “Nigerians don't trust agents.”
The real problem is that trust has become too expensive.
A rental market should not require you to gamble your life savings just to find out whether a listing is genuine.
You shouldn't have to become a detective to verify whether the person asking for your money actually has the right to rent out the property.
And you shouldn't need to know someone who knows someone before you can find a decent place to live.
That is the problem we are trying to solve with ExRen.
Not by asking people to “trust us.”
But by building a process where trust can be verified.
Verified listings.
Verified landlords.
Verified agents.
Transparent fees.
Clear property information.
A rental experience where what you see is actually what you're getting.
Because finding a home should feel like finding a home.
Not surviving a scam.
