Before barcodes and baggage tags, hotels had luggage labels. When you arrived at a hotel, a porter would paste one on your suitcase when you checked in.

Soon they became more than practical tags, travellers collected them, and the suitcase was more like a travel diary.

In the 1960s, the ritual started to disappear. Suitcases went plastic, paste stopped sticking, air travel became way more common, these labels were replaced by a paper tag around the handle.

Today, they remain as souvenirs of a more artsy era.
