The penultimate ferry of the season came home to Cawsand this afternoon.

We watched her from up by the memorial, a small white boat with a long wake, crossing the Sound in that low October sun. There were sails scattered all the way across to the breakwater, and the light was catching the rooftops below me. It felt like the whole bay had turned out to see her in.

All summer that boat has carried day trippers, families with buckets and spades, dogs and guests heading over to the Barbican for supper. Today she brought the last of them home.

The village doesn't close for winter. It just slows down. The pubs keep their fires going, the beaches belong to the dog walkers again, and the only way in is the long way round the lanes.

See you in the spring, old friend.

Beau has put together his guide to Cawsand in autumn, with help from his very naughty mate Loki 🐾

It starts with a 7.30am sunrise swim (someone else's, he stays dry), then woodland walks, wide empty beaches and plenty of sand. All the local pubs keep water and snacks out for four-legged visitors. The Stores lets dogs in too, though Beau says it gets risky if a nose rises above the counter (Loki has form). By evening it's the open fire and a very well supervised supper.
