🇹🇭⚠️A terrifying intersection of infrastructure failure and natural disaster is playing out in Thailand. The severe, city-wide floods currently impacting Bangkok make the city’s notoriously tangled, low-hanging cables an active, life-threatening electrocution risk.
When floodwaters reach waist-high levels, the danger spikes drastically due to several critical factors:
Submerged Infrastructure: While the bulk of the lower-hanging "spaghetti" lines are actually telecom and internet wires, live electrical lines, junction boxes, and ungrounded street fixtures frequently end up submerged during extreme deluges.
Waterborne Currents: Electricity treats floodwater as a massive conductor. If a live wire touches the water or a transformer sparks near the flood zone, the current can travel through the water and strike anyone wading nearby.
Emergency Power Cuts: Because of this exact nightmare, local shops and the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) are actively forcing localised power outages and shutting off grids in high-risk zones to prevent mass electrocutions.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and the MEA are currently executing a massive, multi-year plan to bury over 300 kilometers of electrical infrastructure. While teams have successfully completed significant portions of major arteries like Sukhumvit Road and Wireless Road, progress is agonizingly slow because of two main reasons 1.) Extreme Engineering Challenges due the fact that Bangkok is a sinking flat city built on clay, and 2.) Bureaucratic Overhead as Hundreds of thousands of cables belong to independent telecom companies. For decades, new lines were piled on top of old, dead wires without anyone removing the useless infrastructure. Sorting through this "rats nest" to move active utilities underground requires painful inter-agency coordination.
If you are currently tracking loved ones or trying to navigate the situation in Bangkok, please note that the city has urged everyone to stay indoors, avoid major flooded roads, and report hazards or requests for assistance through the Traffy Fondue app or by dialing the BMA Hotline at 1555.
Bangkok’s governor on Saturday declared Thailand’s capital city a disaster-affected zone after torrential rain led to widespread flooding, while the weather agency forecast thunderstorms over the weekend.
