DEFRA Response on SFI 2026
We have received a response from DEFRA to Andrew Hardcastle's letter regarding the SFI 2026 and the appalling handing of the application process. Stephen Morgan, parliamentary under secretary of state, has written setting out DEFRA's stance on the matter. A full copy of this letter is attached.
While a response is welcome, the content of this letter falls short of addressing the key issues. The position of blaming a previous government while claiming there is insufficient funds does not deal with the matter.
We have called again for urgent action on the design of the SFI 2027 scheme, including making details of the scheme available well in advance of it opening, ensuring the scheme is available from March 2027 to allow for continuation of expiring schemes, ensuring it is not run on a 'first come, first served' basis and that there is some scoring or targeting to ensure the best schemes are progressed.
The response from DEFRA fails to address many issues, including the IT issues experienced by many applicants, the lack of available budget for the scheme, the number of expiring CSS Mid-Tier schemes which have no replacement scheme and the large number of future schemes which are due to expire without any commitment for an agricultural budget beyond the SFI 2027 scheme. We will continue to press the government for action on these points.
As a firm, we will continue to push for a fair and open application process on future schemes, properly targeted funding to both address the governments priorities but also to support farmers in achieving environmental actions at scale without being penalised or properly rewarded for their actions, and with a suitable budget to meet demand and government targets.
