If you have a stay at Lower Holly Barn a visit to the Ladybower and Derwent reservoirs is a good day out....

By 1945, the village of Derwent had disappeared beneath Ladybower Reservoir. Where homes, gardens and lanes had once filled the valley, there was now open water.

Filling began in 1943. Rain, streams and the River Derwent gradually reclaimed the valley, covering the remains of a community whose residents had been moved away and whose buildings had largely been demolished.

For a time, the village’s church tower stood above the water—a solitary landmark marking where Derwent had been. It survived until 1947, when it was demolished amid concerns about people attempting to reach it.

During exceptionally dry spells, falling water levels still expose traces of the village: foundations, old roads and the stone remains of lives once lived there.

Then there is the story of the bell.

Local legend tells of church bells heard ringing beneath the reservoir, even though Derwent’s bell had been removed before the waters rose.

Perhaps that is why the story endures. The village is gone, but people have never quite stopped listening for it.
