This Wednesday, the Chancellor will deliver the Autumn Budget, and as always there has been plenty of speculation about what it might contain.

For individuals and families, much of the attention has been on inheritance tax, capital gains tax, pensions and property, all of which can have a direct bearing on how you plan for the future and what you are able to pass on. Some changes are already on the way whatever is announced this week. From April 2027, unused pension funds are due to be brought into the scope of inheritance tax, which is prompting many people to look again at their Wills and wider estate planning.

It is natural to feel uneasy when the rules around your family's future are up for discussion, but it is rarely wise to make big decisions on the strength of a rumour. Once the detail is published, our Private Client team will look at what it means in practice and share a summary here.

In the meantime, if it has been a while since you reviewed your Will, this is a good moment to start that conversation.

The Stephen Rimmer team recently got together for an evening of bowling and a little friendly competition! 🎳

It was lovely to catch up with colleagues outside the office at Tenpin Eastbourne and spend some time together away from our desks. Thank you to everyone who came along and made it such an enjoyable evening.

Congratulations to Adrian Sharpin, who took the overall win and earned himself the bragging rights!

Sickness absence is a fact of working life, but the way it is managed makes a real difference, to the employee, to the wider team and to the employer's legal risk.

Most employers want to do the right thing when a member of staff is unwell. The difficulty is knowing how much contact is appropriate, how to handle a return to work sensitively and what to do when an absence becomes long term or keeps recurring.

There have been changes to keep in mind too. Since April, Statutory Sick Pay has been payable from the first day of absence, and where an employee's health amounts to a disability there is a duty to consider reasonable adjustments, such as a phased return. Applying a policy rigidly, without looking at the individual circumstances, is where employers tend to run into trouble.

In his latest article, Jerome Soucek sets out a practical and supportive approach to managing sickness absence and return to work.

Meet Daisy Dyer, Associate Solicitor in our Residential Conveyancing team.

Daisy qualified as a solicitor in 2026 after completing the Solicitors Qualifying Exams and her qualifying work experience with Stephen Rimmer, and we are proud to have supported her through every stage of that journey.

Her career with the firm began after undertaking work experience, before joining as a Family paralegal and later securing a training contract, which started in 2024.

Today, Daisy guides clients through one of the biggest transactions of their lives, and she understands that behind every house move there is a family, a fresh start or a big decision.

Outside work, Daisy enjoys learning new recipes, cooking for family and friends, travelling and discovering new places.

A break clause is one of those parts of a commercial lease that can have a significant practical effect, and it is often overlooked until the moment it is needed.

In simple terms, a break clause may allow a landlord or tenant to end a commercial lease before the full term has expired. For a business, that flexibility can be invaluable if circumstances change. Whether it can be used, and how, depends on the wording of the lease and the procedure that needs to be followed, and the conditions can be strict. A notice served a day late, or without every condition being met, can mean the break is lost altogether.

Our latest FAQ looks at what a break clause is, why it matters and why the details of the lease should be checked carefully before any notice is served.

If you are unsure where you stand with your lease, our Commercial Property team is always happy to talk it through.

Legal support can feel more straightforward when you know there is someone local you can speak to.

Whether it is a house move, a separation, a loved one's estate or an issue in your business, it is reassuring to have a solicitor who knows the area and is happy to see you in person when that would help.

We have offices in Eastbourne, Bexhill-on-Sea and Hastings, as well as a dedicated Dispute Resolution office in Eastbourne. Across the firm, our solicitors advise individuals and businesses on matters including family law, Wills and probate, conveyancing, business law, dispute resolution and criminal defence.

We know that picking up the phone to a solicitor can feel like a big step, so however you get in touch, we will take the time to listen and explain what happens next.

You can find the contact details for each office here:

We have just passed 400 reviews on Google, and we wanted to take a moment to say thank you 🎉

Behind every one of those reviews is a person who trusted us with something that mattered to them, whether that was a house move, a family matter, a Will or a problem in their business, and who then took the time afterwards to share how it went. That means a great deal to everyone here.

We read every review. The kind words are passed on to the solicitors and teams involved, and where someone tells us something could have been better, we listen and learn from it. It is one of the ways we keep improving how we look after people.

So to every client who has left feedback, on Google or elsewhere, thank you. It helps other people across East Sussex find a solicitor they can trust, and it means more to the team than you might think.

Location is often the deciding factor when buying a home, and for families a school catchment area can be the biggest draw of all.

It’s easy to see why finding a home near the school you have set your heart on feels like the perfect outcome, but school catchment areas are not guaranteed, as admissions criteria prioritise certain groups, including siblings, and the distance a school’s places extend each year depends on the number of families applying.

That is why it is worth checking the school's admissions policy and the local authority's own information directly, rather than relying on what an estate agent tells you. Your conveyancer cannot confirm a school place, but the searches carried out during the purchase will flag other things worth knowing, such as planning applications and flood risk.

In his latest article, Noel Martin, Partner in our Residential Conveyancing team, shares some practical points on location to weigh up before you commit, from commute times and parking to broadband and council tax bands.

When parents separate, the practical questions around children are often the ones that matter most day to day, and the ones that cause the most worry.

Where will the children live? How will time with each parent work? What happens if you cannot reach an agreement? These are not easy conversations to have, particularly while emotions are still raw.

Where parents cannot agree, a Child Arrangements Order can set out where a child lives, who they spend time with and whether other types of contact should take place.

Court proceedings are not always necessary, though, and for many families they are best avoided. Many parents are able to agree arrangements between themselves or with support such as mediation. Where agreement is not possible, getting legal advice early can help you understand the options, take some of the heat out of the situation and keep the focus on what is best for the child.

Our Family Law team will listen and explain your options in plain English, without judgement.
