Called out for a lighting fault at a rental property today, turns out the previous "electrician" found this rewirable cartridge fuse with no means of securing fuse wire (as the screws had welded themselves in place), so just wrapped it around the screwehead and called it a day. Clearly with all his knowledge, he was unaware of the retrofit MCBs available, and figured it was worth the risk.

Pictures give an indication of the heat damage. That was a fire waiting to happen.

Luckily our electricians are fully conversant, and had the situation rectified in a matter of minutes. And we've supplied the landlord in question with a comprehensive report and our recommendations to get the property up to standard.

Although this gave us a chuckle, having found many, interesting alternatives to in-line protective devices over the years, we feel the following disclaimer is necessary:

Always replace with the Correct Fuse:
Always use a new fuse with the exact amperage rating specified for the device or circuit. Using anything else allows excessive current flow, and can lead to appliance damage, overload, and in serious cases, electrical fire.

Identify the Fault:
If a fuse blows repeatedly, there's an underlying problem (like a short circuit or faulty appliance) that needs to be diagnosed and repaired.

If in any doubt at all, always consult a competent professional.

Nice little laminate floor job started today, so that this family can get their youngest back in his own room. Couple of lengths of skirting still to replace, as well as new architrave and trim the door. Huge improvement to the room!
