📣Midweek museum object!

We don't just collect objects from Dingwall - our collection covers a huge area which is similar to the catchment area of Dingwall Academy.

This metal quaich came to us from Mr William MacDonald, a blacksmith from Culbokie, who is rumoured to have acquired it in 1890. We believe it came from Carn Mor Dun, a 2000 year old Iron Age Dun just outside of Culbokie which today is surrounded by forestry. In 1859 it is rumoured that bones and 'warlike' objects were found within the dun, but there's no mentioned of a quaich. We don't think it looks 2000 years old, but what do you think?

It's the end of another season and time to say a HUGE thank you to all of our volunteers who make the museum what it is.

Every year we celebrate with a trip to a local landmark and yesterday we were treated to a tour of Foulis Castle, which is still lived in by the Munro family. It's was a brilliant afternoon full of stories, scones and a bannock stone, and we'd like to extend our thanks to the family for making us feel so welcome.

Juliana Nedobi and her father visited the Museum this morning. They are the latest of our regular visitors from Rosario in Argentina that is home to the magnificent Club Atlético Rosario Central, CARC, founded in 1889 as the Central Argentine Railway Company football club by Dingwall-born railway worker Colin Bain Calder. They presented us with the latest issue of CARC shirt to add to what is becoming a very significant collection of Canalla memorabilia!

Happy Throwback Thursday everyone! Today, we have a rather sombre picture to share. With Remembrance Sunday fast approaching, we thought we would share some items in our collection that relate to our local battalion, the 4th Seaforth Highlanders. If you're interested in the battalion, or conducting some family history research on a relative who was a member, our Military Room is a great place to start.

In this photograph, dated the same month the First World War broke out, we see the battalion at Dingwall train station heading for the front. Who knows how many made it home to Dingwall again, as throughout the duration of the war, around 3 in every 10 men from the battalion died.

(Statistics source: History of the Fourth Battalion the Seaforth Highlanders by Lieut- Colonel M. M. Haldane)

Happy Monday everyone! Today, we have a photo of the National Hotel, which appears tot have been taken from the upper floors of the Royal Hotel across the road. We don't have a precise date for this one, but we're guessing sometime around 1930-40. Can you help us narrow it down?
