🏡 Imagine buying a house ….. only to then discover the existing foundations aren’t strong enough to support your renovation plans 🏠
That’s exactly the sort of nasty surprise that can turn a profitable renovation into a financial nightmare.
You might assume that because an extension is already standing, its foundations will be suitable for building further or adding another storey.
BIG MISTAKE! ⚠️
Existing foundations may be perfectly adequate for the structure they’re supporting, but completely unsuitable for the additional weight of your proposed extension renovation
And discovering this AFTER you’ve purchased the property could mean expensive underpinning, new foundations, a complete redesign or even abandoning your plans altogether.
💡 My advice: Before buying a property you intend to extend, get a structural engineer to assess whether the existing foundations are likely to be suitable. Sometimes trial holes are needed to establish their depth and construction.
Because the most expensive renovation mistakes are often the ones you can’t see!
