In the Footsteps of Roman Legions...
A 7-mile loop through the southern Lincolnshire Wolds, linking Fulletby, Belchford, Tetford and the hamlet of Salmonby. You get woods, lakes, rolling hills and some of the best views in the county (so much for Lincolnshire being flat).
The name comes from a stretch that follows an old Roman road. Just down the hill, Horncastle still has parts of its Roman walls, built of local sandstone around 1,700 years ago and in places still standing over 3m high.
The Fulletby to Belchford leg follows the Viking Way, the 147-mile trail from the Humber to Rutland Water, waymarked by its little yellow Viking helmets.
Tetford is Tennyson country. The young poet grew up a mile or so away in Somersby and is said to have been a regular at the White Hart.
Back in Fulletby, look out for the church where Henry Winn served as parish clerk for an astonishing 72 years. He was the village cobbler, schoolteacher and poet too.
Stout boots, a flask, and about 4 hours. Worth every muddy step.
