A drawing can be correct and still be hard to understand as a real space.

After 45 years in construction, one thing I've learnt is that there's a big difference between looking at a drawing and understanding how a building actually goes together.

With 3D modelling, we can go beyond the floor plans and explore the construction details, seeing how different parts of the building fit together before work begins.

Not all 3D models are the same! 🏠

Someone asked me the other day about the different types of 3D models you can create in SketchUp.

Some are fairly basic, showing room sizes and layouts. Others go much further, right down to the construction details.

Having spent years fitting windows, I know how important those finishing details are. The trims, the silicone behind them and that nice, neat bead of sealant can make all the difference.

That's where detailed 3D modelling comes into its own. It's not just about seeing what a building looks like, but understanding how it all goes together.

Something I've learned over the years in construction is that people can spend thousands on an extension or renovation, only to discover when it's finished that it wasn't quite what they imagined.

Not because the builders got it wrong.

Not because the drawings were wrong.

But because it's not always easy to understand room sizes, proportions and how a finished space will actually feel from drawings alone.

A lady recently approached me about creating some 3D visuals for a building project.

She told me about an extension she'd had built some years ago.

There was nothing wrong with the builders or the drawings. The problem was that she'd struggled to understand the room sizes, proportions and how the finished space would actually feel.

And once it was built, it wasn't quite what she'd pictured.

This time, she wanted to see everything properly before work started.

And that's something I've come to understand after more than 40 years in construction.

Drawings are essential, but not everybody can visualise a finished building from lines on paper.
