⚡ SWITCHED OFF DOESN'T ALWAYS MEAN SAFE! ⚡

What should have been a straightforward ceiling fan installation turned into the discovery of a potentially deadly electrical fault.

We discovered that the live and neutral wires had been connected the wrong way round!
And here's the really frightening part...
It had apparently been like this since the apartment was built – 25 YEARS AGO!

For a quarter of a century, this dangerous fault had gone unnoticed!

Now, in simple terms, why is this so serious?

When you turn off a light switch or circuit breaker, you naturally assume the electricity has been switched off and everything is safe.
BUT THAT ISN'T ALWAYS THE CASE!

With the live and neutral wires reversed, certain switches and breakers can disconnect the wrong wire.
⚡ You turn the switch OFF
⚡ You turn the circuit breaker OFF
⚡ You believe the electricity is OFF
⚡ BUT THE WIRING COULD STILL BE LIVE!

Imagine someone changing a light fitting or ceiling fan, believing they'd safely switched off the electricity.

Without the correct electrical testing equipment to prove the wiring was dead, they could have received a potentially fatal electric shock.

🚨 The problem went right back to the main electrical cupboard.

The incorrect connections had to be rectified both in the main electrical cupboard AND within the apartment itself.

25 YEARS! Just think how many people could have worked on the electrics during that time, completely unaware of the danger.

Electricity doesn't give you a warning. You can't see it, and just because something is switched off doesn't mean it's safe to touch.
A correctly functioning main isolator should disconnect the supply, but you should NEVER rely on the position of a switch or breaker alone.

Always test and prove the circuit is dead before carrying out electrical work.

Thankfully, this fault was discovered.

⚠️🔥 ELECTRICAL SAFETY – PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO READ THIS! 🔥⚠️

These photographs are a stark reminder of just how dangerous electrical adapters can become 😱

During a recent job here on the Costa del Sol, we came across this severely burnt electrical adapter and wall socket. And quite frankly, the photographs speak for themselves 😳

The adapter had suffered extensive heat damage, the plastic had melted, the electrical contacts were badly burnt, and the wall socket itself was severely damaged. This could very easily have resulted in a house fire.

Poor-quality adapters can have inadequate electrical contacts, which can cause resistance, excessive heat and potentially fire.

⚡️ Check the electricity rating:-
Not all adapters are designed to handle high-powered appliances. Always check the amperage and wattage ratings against the appliance's requirements.

⚡ Be particularly careful with high-powered appliances:-
Tumble dryers, washing machines, portable heaters and other appliances drawing significant electrical loads require properly rated connections.

⚡ Watch for the warning signs:-
Burning smells, discolouration, crackling noises, melted plastic or plugs and sockets becoming unusually hot are all signs that something is seriously wrong.

🔧 So, what did we do?
We removed the severely damaged adapter and replaced the burnt-out wall socket. We also checked the electrical connections and fitted a new 16A-rated Simon adapter, shown in the final photograph.

The bottom line?
Saving a few euros on an unsuitable electrical adapter is simply not worth risking your home, your belongings or, more importantly, the lives of the people inside it. If you have any doubts about an electrical connection, stop using it and have it inspected by a qualified professional.

And please, please, do not leave tumble driers, washings machines etc on when you are away from your property.

Out with the old, in with the new 🚰💧

An old water heater replaced, we think this one was 20 years old so it had done the owner proud 👍

Completed with new flexible connections, and also a brand-new extractor hose fitted for the tumble dryer.

Another job ticked off the list, neat, tidy and done properly ✔️

And we had the little fluff ball keeping us company 🤗🥰🐾🐾

This is not a 5 minute job on a normal clean that's for sure 👀 They look lovely but they are a long old job to get clean again.
