On Saturday, October 31, Barcelona does Halloween its own way. Devils take over the streets of El Born, carrying fireworks on sticks and pointing them at the crowd.

This is a correfoc, which means "fire run" in Catalan. Drummers set the beat, the devils run through the old streets, and sparks fly over everyone's head. The crowd has a job too: chase the devils, dodge them, or dance right under the sparks. To join in, the city says you need protective clothing and common sense.

There are two runs. The children's correfoc starts at 9 PM. The adults' correfoc starts at 10:30 PM.

The date is not a coincidence. October 31 is also the Castanyada, the Catalan night of roasted chestnuts and panellets (little marzipan sweets). So strictly speaking, this is not Halloween. It is a local tradition that shares the night with it, and it is a lot louder.

The fire run is also younger than it looks. According to folklorist Joan Amades, the first written trace of a devil dance dates to 1150, at the wedding banquet of the Count of Barcelona. By the 1400s, devils walked in the city's religious processions. But the modern correfoc was born by accident in 1978, at the La Mercè festival. Organizers planned a classic devil dance, the crowd jumped in, and it turned into the fire run we know today.

Barcelona's new airport train is expected to start running in the first half of 2027, and it will take you from the city center to Terminal 1 in just over 20 minutes.

The line is called R-Aeroport. It is run by FGC, the Catalan government's railway company, and it will use brand-new trains built right next to Barcelona. Ten are on order. The first one was unveiled last year and has been in testing since.

Trains will leave every 15 minutes and stop at nine stations along a 22.7 km route, from Sant Andreu to Terminal 1. Two of those stops are Passeig de Gràcia, the famous avenue with Casa Batlló and La Pedrera, and Sants, the city's main train station.

Here is why this matters. Terminal 1 opened in 2009, and today the only rail link to it is the metro's L9 Sud line. There is no direct train.

The new trains are designed for people with suitcases. They have luggage space, wider corridors, and nine screens showing live flight departures and arrivals. Each train can carry up to 656 passengers.
