Some news in the last week, interest rates held by 2.25%, unemployment held steady at 6.4%, 42000 jobs lost, and Trump renaming Lake Ontario.
Despite some gain in Q2 GDP, trade developments and continued global uncertainty were enough for the Bank to hold rates.
Q3 may be shaping to look a little different, evidence indicates that Q3 may be slowing (by virtue of monthly GDP and exports) and the job market, while steady overall has seen a loss of 42,000 jobs, with 20,000 public sector jobs declining this month alone.
Does this mean we will see a hike? Perhaps not, uncertainty will continue to prevent the need to hike rates, and if a rate hike were to occur, it will be used as a defensive mechanism against oil and tariffs, to help offset the resulting rising inflation.
Developments continue to change rapidly, and as such developments occur, the impact to the overall economy and interest rate will be determined at that point in time.
