As you head to the polls keep in mind what change at your doorstep could look like, for better or worse.

For us, we see a housing future where people have a choice of renting or owning in a neighbourhood they love, where alternative means to own a home through co-ownership, co-ops or gentle density bring people closer to their communities and the space around them. What is a future worth investing in? , co-founder of Husmates, had the opportunity to speak at the Nrth Startup Stage last month to share that a future worth investing in is one that gives people hope. In housing, we are at a pivotal moment. Either a paradigm shift will create abundance, or the cost of living will make it impossible to own a home anywhere. Either way, change is coming, and will redefine how people live in cities forever.

We believe that co-ownership is a necessary piece of puzzle that can bring people together to create a more just future in housing and redefine the individual role you play in a city. We’re lucky to have been able to share this story alongside Shevonne Chin from FLIK FIREWORKS and Robin Petrogiannis from OurPwr, two incredible startups working to redefine what tech can do to create safer experiences. Moments captured from Nrth last week, where co-founder of Husmates, took the startup stage to share his story growing up and how it is inseparable from the work he does today in hosing and co-ownership.

For those who were unable to attend, the moral of his story is that relying on your community to catch you when you fall can feel vulnerable, but is more important than ever when systems of healthcare, education, and housing fail to serve those who need them the most. And as these systems fail more and more people, there should be options available for you to fight to remain in a community you rely on in times of need.

We believe that co-ownership is a necessary piece of puzzle that can bring people together to create a more just future in housing and redefine the individual role you play in a city. In an increasing service economy dominated by apps and automations, we need more neighbours to show up and take care of each other. Organizing and acting collectively can ensure individuals are not faced with life altering consequences to variables they have little control over alone.

We were recently mentioned in Canadian Architect magazine Magazine’s September Issue with a story almost too good to be true: two strangers met on Husmates and co-purchased a home in Toronto’s Riverdale neighbourhood — yes, the fancy, big house, Riverdale neighbourhood you’re thinking of.
