An unregistered assistant answering the phone is support work. The same assistant offering a view on price is trading work.

It rarely happens as one clear decision. It creeps in: fielding a question to be helpful, covering an open house because the agent got double-booked, sharing a thought on what a buyer should offer. Each step feels minor.

RECO has been consistent for years: an unregistered assistant cannot undertake any activity that falls under “trade” as defined by TRESA.

Angie Paonessa, Compliance Manager at myAbode, puts it in plain language: “If the conversation is about helping a deal happen, assume it belongs to a registrant, not unregistered staff.”
