More than 47% of food waste generated by Toronto single-family households is avoidable.

A lot of food waste can be prevented before it ever reaches the green bin.

Buying only what we need, planning meals around what we already have, storing food properly and finding ways to use leftovers can all help us get more value from the food we buy. Food waste reduction is also an important part of Toronto’s waste management strategy.

This Food Friday, look at what you already have at home before your next grocery trip.

What leftovers could you use this weekend?

What if we kept the things we already have in use instead of replacing them?

Sharing something you only use occasionally, repairing something that is broken, buying secondhand or giving an unwanted item to someone who can use it are all simple ways to reduce waste.

And Toronto is already putting these ideas into practice.

Through the City’s Community Reduce Reuse Programs, more than 10,000 items have been repaired or repurposed through Sharing and Reuse Spaces, while nearly 30,000 bicycles have been repaired or refurbished.

That is the circular economy in action: keeping useful things in circulation for longer.

Before you buy something new, ask yourself: can I reuse it or repair what I have instead?

The final results on election night will be close.

Other than voting, the most important way to help re-elect Olivia and stop Brad is to volunteer on election day! Sign up: progresstoronto.ca/eday or link in bio

Right-wing groups have mobilized hundreds of their own volunteers for Brad. Let’s show up for Olivia Chow on October 26.

What do volunteers do on election day?
1. Knock on doors of identified supporters
2. Confirm their support
3. Remind them to vote and give them voter information

No experience is necessary! You’ll be provided everything you need.

Sign up right now to volunteer! progresstoronto.ca/eday or link in bio
