I have a client in his 90s. We've worked together on and off for years now. No complicated commitments, no pressure, no particular end game. Somewhere along the way, the relationship became more important than the business.
When he calls, I answer. Doesn't matter who I'm with or what I'm doing. Everyone else can wait a minute, because what if he's fallen? What if he needs help? What if he just needs someone to answer the phone?
I will be that constant.
There's a lot of talk in this industry about production, numbers, sales and success. Sure, those things matter sometimes, but some of the most meaningful parts of this career have absolutely nothing to do with transactions and everything to do with relationships.
It's the people you meet, the stories you're trusted to carry, the relationships that develop by chance.
What a quiet pleasure it is to have a career that gives me the opportunity to know people I might never otherwise have met.
A blessing.
