๐Ÿฆ… Wildlife Wednesday: Taking Wildlife Wednesday to New Heights!

Our field crews spend a lot of time looking down at the ground, but sometimes the best sights are up above!

These two beautiful bald eagles, an adult and a juvenile, were spotted soaring through the sky during a recent day in the field.

Fun fact: Bald eagles don't develop their iconic white heads and tails until they're around 4โ€“5 years old! Juveniles are mostly brown, which means they can sometimes be mistaken for a completely different bird.

With wingspans reaching over 7 feet, these impressive birds certainly know how to make an entrance!

Not a bad view from the office, if you ask us! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

๐Ÿก Tip Tuesday: Is Your Fence Actually on Your Property Line? ๐Ÿ“

You've got a fence, your neighbour's got a fence, and everyone knows where their property ends... right? ๐Ÿค”
Well, not necessarily!
Just because a fence has been standing for 20 years doesn't mean it's actually on the property line!

๐Ÿšง Here's the thing: Fences are sometimes built for convenience, privacy, or simply where someone thought the boundary was. And just because the previous homeowner put it there doesn't mean they got it right!
๐ŸŒณ The same goes for tree lines, hedges, and other natural features. They're not always reliable indicators of property boundaries.
๐Ÿก Why does it matter? An incorrectly placed fence could lead to neighbour disputes, costly repairs, or unexpected surprises when it's time to sell or develop your property.
๐Ÿ“ Before installing a new fence, replacing an old one, or starting that backyard project, it's worth knowing exactly where your property lines are.

The bottom line? Your fence might keep the dog in, but that doesn't mean it's keeping your property lines straight! ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ˜‚

At Spade Geomatics, we take the guesswork out of property boundaries so you can build with confidence!

๐Ÿ„ Fungus Friday: Little Red Riding Shroom!

Somewhere in the Nova Scotia woods, there's a mushroom that looks like it belongs in a fairy tale! โค๏ธ๐Ÿ„

Our field crew spotted this tiny red beauty nestled among the moss during a recent survey.

We think it might be a Russula mushroom, also known as a brittlegill. These colourful little fungi get their name from their unusually brittle flesh, which can snap rather than bend!

Fun fact: Russulas come in almost every colour of the rainbow, and many form underground partnerships with trees, helping keep our forests healthy.

Just another little reminder that sometimes the most interesting things we find in the field are right under our boots!

๐ŸŒฟ Wildlife Wednesdayโ€ฆ sort of! ๐Ÿ‘ป

Okay, technically this one isnโ€™t wildlife - but it was too cool not to share!
Just in time for Halloween season - Meet Ghost Pipe (monotropa uniflora), one of the stranger things you might stumble across on the forest floor. Despite looking a whole lot like a mushroom, itโ€™s actually a flowering plant. It has no chlorophyll, which explains that eerie, almost translucent white colour.

Instead of soaking up the sun like most plants, Ghost Pipe gets its energy through an underground relationship with fungi and trees. Basically, it has found a way to survive in the woods without ever having to work on its tan. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Just another interesting find from a day in the field!

๐Ÿ“ Tip Tuesday: Hands Off the Survey Pins! ๐Ÿšซ

Ever found a little metal marker sticking out of the ground and wondered what it was doing there? ๐Ÿค”

That small marker might not look like much, but it could be an important piece of your property's history!

MYTH: If I find a survey pin, I can move it to where I think my property line should be.
FACT: Survey pins are placed for a reason, and moving one without proper authority can lead to some pretty big headaches!

๐Ÿ“ Survey markers help establish property boundaries and are important evidence in legal surveys.
โš ๏ธ Moving or disturbing one can create confusion, lead to neighbour disputes, and potentially result in legal consequences.
๐Ÿก Planning a fence, shed, or other backyard project? Make sure you know where your property lines are before getting started!

The bottom line? If you find a survey pin, leave it where it is! Your property line doesn't move just because you think it should. ๐Ÿ˜‰

๐Ÿ„ Fungus Friday: Meet Slippery Jack!

Not all mushrooms have glamorous names, but this one might just be our favourite! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Our field crew spotted this shiny little fellow tucked among the moss and decaying wood during a recent survey.

We think it might be a Slippery Jack, a type of mushroom known for its ridiculously slimy cap!

Fun fact: Slippery Jacks form underground partnerships with pine trees, helping them absorb water and nutrients. So, while we're busy surveying the land, these little guys are working beneath it!

Who knew something so slimy could be so helpful? ๐Ÿ˜‚

๐Ÿ› Wildlife Wednesday: The Things We Find in the Woods!

Not everything our field crews encounter is cute and cuddly. Sometimes it's bright green, slightly creepy, and has way too many legs. ๐Ÿ˜‚

This little guy, possibly a type of looper moth caterpillar, was spotted making his way across a tree during a recent survey.

Despite his questionable good looks, caterpillars like this one play an important role in the ecosystem, eventually transforming into moths and providing a tasty snack for birds along the way!

We're not sure where he was headed, but he certainly wasn't worried about blending in! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Can You Survey Your Property With Your Cell Phone? ๐Ÿ“

Your phone can do a lot of things these days, but can it tell you exactly where your property lines are? ๐Ÿค”

Short answer: Not reliably!

While GPS apps and online mapping tools are great for getting a general idea of your property boundaries, they aren't accurate enough to establish legal property lines.

๐ŸŒณ Trees, buildings, and other obstacles can affect GPS accuracy, sometimes putting your location several metres off!

๐Ÿ“ Professional land surveyors use specialized equipment, property records, and survey evidence to accurately establish boundaries.

๐Ÿก Planning a fence, building a deck, buying property, or dealing with a neighbourly disagreement? Knowing exactly where your property lines are can save you a whole lot of headaches (and money!) down the road.

Your phone can help you find your property. A land surveyor can help you find your property lines! ๐Ÿ˜‰

At Spade Geomatics, we're here to help you know exactly where you stand!

๐Ÿ„ Fungus Friday: Roommates!

Apparently, even mushrooms have neighbours!

Our field crew spotted these two sharing a little patch of moss during a recent survey.

The larger white mushroom may be a type of milkcap, a fascinating group of fungi known for producing a milky liquid when damaged.

And its little neighbour? Well, we're still working on that introduction! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Fun fact: Many woodland mushrooms have an underground partnership with nearby trees, helping them absorb nutrients and water in exchange for sugars.

Just another reminder that there's a whole lot happening beneath our feet while we're busy surveying what's above them!

๐ŸฆŒ๐ŸŽ Wildlife Wednesday!

Richard was out surveying when he spotted this little opportunist in the woods behind the house, helping itself to a crab apple.

No permission. No grocery bill. No shame. ๐Ÿ˜‚

At this point, weโ€™re starting to think Richardโ€™s survey equipment doubles as some sort of wildlife beacon - because the animals just keep finding him.

Thankfully, this one was only interested in the free snacks. ๐ŸŽ๐ŸฆŒ
