There are some houses where the history feels particularly present. Today at Iwanoff House was one of those occasions.
And there’s a reason people queue to see it. Sixty years after it was built, the fascination with Iwanoff House - and Iwanoff’s architecture more broadly - remains as strong as ever.
It was such a privilege to have Michael and Bettina Iwanoff at the home today - their first time seeing it since its recent renovation and restoration.
I’ve known Michael and Bettina for some years now, and it was particularly special to walk through the house with them and hear their thoughts on what has been done. Designed and built more than sixty years ago by Michael’s father, the late Iwan Iwanoff, this was the family home Michael grew up in, making it all the more meaningful to see it through his eyes as the house enters its latest chapter.
They were incredibly complimentary of the work - both the restoration of the original architecture and the way the more recent interventions have been approached.
We were also fortunate to have several architects through the home today, all of whom spoke so highly of the house and the work that has been undertaken. There is always something quite special about hearing that level of appreciation from people who understand the architecture, its significance and the responsibility that comes with working on a house like this.
Iwanoff House is an important piece of Western Australian architectural history, but days like today are a reminder that behind that history is a family, a home and a lifetime of memories.
A very special afternoon.
