In 1920, Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus, designed this armchair for the director’s office at the Bauhaus Weimar. It is not only a landmark work of early Bauhaus furniture, but also a spatial realisation of the form follows function principle — using a cantilevered structure and geometric blocks, it turns an architectural-level avant-garde experiment into a seatable “declarative furniture”.

Gropius would later go on to help design two of America’s most recognisable modernist buildings — New York’s MetLife Building (originally the Pan Am Building) and Boston’s John F. Kennedy Federal Building.

The Eighth Penthouse was designed equally for entertaining as it was for private tranquillity.

Expansive spaces bring people together, while more intimate moments throughout the residence create places to retreat. Materiality, light and proportion do much of the work — creating a home that can shift effortlessly from lively and social to quiet and considered.

CASA FORNASETTI // MILAN

Casa Fornasetti has been the historic home of the Fornasetti family since the late 19th century. Located in Milan’s Città Studi district, today it stands as a unique testament to the unmistakable creativity that gave rise to the eponymous Italian brand.

The building was constructed in the 19th century by Piero Fornasetti’s parents. Remodeled and expanded, it became the place where the Milanese artist lived with his family and established, and later continued, his creative studio. Although the building was originally conceived exclusively for the family, Piero focused the life of the house and its very evolution around his artistic activity and the production of objects, turning it into a true workshop, complete with a lithographic printing press.

While retaining traces of its past, today the Casa is no longer a production site, but a private residence and the beating heart of Fornasetti’s creative and design work. Thanks to the creative intervention of Barnaba Fornasetti, Piero’s son and Artistic Director of the Milanese atelier, today the Casa, an elegantly overflowing and mysterious place, is the quintessential manifesto of Fornasetti’s aesthetics, imaginative capacity, and ingenious flair.

The Penthouse at The Eighth, designed by .kennon.

A study in light, proportion, and restraint.

Natural light moves through the space, softening edges and defining each area, while a refined material palette brings warmth and depth.

Every line is intentional, every detail resolved — creating a penthouse that is both considered and highly functional.
