Strata Explained Wednesday: QLD smoke alarm laws are changing.
From 1 January 2027, every Queensland home, including units and townhouses, must have smoke alarms that are photoelectric, interconnected (when one sounds, they all sound) and compliant with Australian Standard AS 3786-2014.
Rental properties and homes being sold have already had to upgrade. Now it's owner occupiers' turn.
Important: smoke alarms inside your lot are your responsibility as the owner, not the body corporate's or TCM Strata's. Check your alarms now. If they're hardwired, book a licensed electrician early.
