Bicheno lay beside the Tasman then with the innocence of a place that did not yet know it would one day be remembered. Roads wandered through open and vacant blocks as though there were no particular reason to hurry anywhere. Houses and shacks sat lightly among the granite and scrub, separated by great pieces of sky, and the Silver Sands Hotel stood bright against the coast, full of voices and cigarette smoke and Saturday nights that everyone imagined would go on forever. It was the early seventies. Trees were smaller. Cars were fewer. The town had not yet grown into itself, nor learnt what growing would mean. In those houses people were living ordinary afternoons they would spend the rest of their lives longing to return to, though they did not know it then. Children ran home before dark. Towels dried on fences. Someone stood at a kitchen window looking towards the sea, unaware that half a century later the view itself would become a kind of ache. And all around them the old granite kept its silence and the ocean went on arriving, wave after wave, knowing perhaps what the town could not: that nothing understands it is becoming a memory while it is still being lived.❤️
