They say rates went up 3%.
Canter's Deli: $24,400 in May. $35,700 the next bill. LADWP told KTLA they don't dispute the amount.
That's not 3%.
UCLA puts the increase at 45% since 2023. Tier 1 base rates went from 22 cents to 27 since January of last year. that's a 23% increase!
Mine was about $1,500 last summer. This one came in at $2,350.
Here's what they don't tell you. Cross into Tier 3 and every kilowatt hour above that line bills at the top rate, which increases in the summer when you need it most. They never have to announce a rate hike for your bill to jump.
I own and manage property across the Valley, so I pulled the usage data on all of it. Two of my houses sat through the same heat wave with nearly identical daily usage and got completely different bills. The only difference was which side of that line they landed on. I had vacant properties running $650 every two months with nobody inside them.
Sewer is worse and nobody is watching it. The City already approved the schedule. 22% to start, six more increases through 2028, a typical household going from $75 every two months to about $155. They voted to DOUBLE it.
And water? We cut usage over 30%. Median household went from 12 HCF down to 7.98. Bills went up anyway, and another increase hits January 1.
Kenneth Mejia is investigating. Over 31,000 signatures got that.

My last post on Nexdoor got over 450 comments, and most of them were some version of "so what do I actually do about it."
So I wrote it down. Ten ways to lower your LADWP bill, nine of them free, starting with the two-minute check that tells you whether you have a rate problem or a house problem. Most people assume rate. A lot of them are house issues, have easy fixes and have no idea.
Facebook won't let me attach a document to a post. Put your email in the comments or DM me and I'll send it over today.
