Palm Coast dog owners will need a new spot for about a month after a dog that frequented the Holland Park dog park was reported to have parvo.

Parvo spreads easily between dogs, so owners whose dogs were there recently should know which signs to watch for.

Palm Coast has closed the dog park at James F. Holland Memorial Park after a reported case of canine parvovirus, or parvo, in a dog that frequently visited the park.

Parvo is a highly contagious virus that can be fatal to dogs, especially puppies and dogs that are not fully vaccinated. It spreads through contact with infected dogs, their f***s and contaminated surfaces.

Both the small and large sides of the park will remain closed until further notice while city staff disinfect them. The dog parks at Lehigh Trailhead, 1350 Belle Terre Parkway, remain open.

HomeFetch has reached out to the city for additional details and will update as more information becomes available.

Putnam County commissioners voted Tuesday to put fines behind animal control’s warnings, with the steepest penalties reserved for owners who break the state’s dangerous dog rules.

County staff told commissioners that right now, officers can leave a warning on the same mailbox again and again with nothing to back it up, while the department fielded 3,855 calls in nine months with just five officers.

A Palm Coast dog trainer already charged in the deaths of two dogs is now facing a second animal cruelty case in Flagler County, this one over a client’s 9-month-old Great Dane.

Alexia Barquet was arrested in July after police found two Labrador retrievers dead inside a storage unit she was renting on the same block as her training business. That case is still pending in circuit court.

Back in July, HomeFetch told the story of Journey, a 9-year-old dog who had spent nearly five years at S.A.F.E. Pet Rescue. This week, that story came full circle: Journey has finally found her forever home, and we’re so proud to share that our coverage helped make it possible.

Journey’s story is the kind that wouldn't normally make the news. A senior dog waiting quietly at a rescue isn’t "breaking news," and without a newsroom dedicated to covering this beat, her story might never have been told.

And her adoption points to something bigger: Local news has long treated dogs as an occasional feel-good segment or a quick story when something goes wrong, while the issues that shape their lives rarely get steady attention. That's why HomeFetch exists, and Journey is the perfect example of why reporting like this matters.

A VERY special thank-you to the staff at S.A.F.E. Pet Rescue for allowing us to tell Journey’s story, but most importantly, for never giving up on this sweet girl. The dedication it takes to keep showing up for dogs like her deserves recognition, too.

And to everyone who read, commented on or shared HomeFetch’s original story: THANK YOU. You’re the reason this kind of reporting can make a difference. Journey’s adoption shows what can happen when the people reading care about dogs just as much as the people reporting on them. 💛
