Shug Ember Shug Ember. Voice of The Embers. Don’t applaud between the songs.

Doreen Broadnax turned sixty-one last month. On the Fourth of July she went home, and the sky spent the whole night saying her name in fire.
Brownsville. Van D**e Houses — brick that teaches you to answer fast or not at all. New Year’s Eve, a diss aimed at Brooklyn comes over the radio, and by the next night a nineteen-year-old girl has the answer on tape. Three hundred thousand people bought it in days. They called it a war — the Roxanne Wars — but look close at what the women did with it. Sparky and Shanté took the fight the men had booked for them and turned it into a record made together, into shared stages, into boxing gloves worn like a joke between sisters. They were supposed to destroy each other. They chose each other instead.
Then the industry did what it does to women who open doors: it closed them behind her. She said it plain — all the doors were closed to me. The first lady of the answer record, and nobody would give her a stage. So she battled that too. Battled the needle. Battled the shame — told her whole story out loud so other women could carry theirs lighter. And when the world stopped booking her, she found the one room that never closes. Her first album was called This Is Sparky D’s World. Her gospel prize came for a song called This Is for the Church. A whole life, held between two titles.
She was my friend. Sundays she’d call — never hello, just bars.
I wrote her a song. It’s called Your Turn, Spark — because her name carried the word turn from the very start, and because she spent her life taking hers and handing us ours.
Rest now, champion. The quiet is yours. You never kept any for yourself.

RECORDLESS COMPANY presents
SHUG EMBER & THE EMBERS — Don’t Applaud Between The Songs
Debut album — 23 tracks — out July 10, 2026

Some voices you discover. This one you recognize — as if she’d always been singing somewhere deep in the South, between a church and a bar that closes late. Shug Ember doesn’t show her face. She shows something better: a mouth, a microphone, and one rule she has laid down in every room she’s ever played — don’t applaud between the songs. Not out of severity. Because the last note has the right to finish dying.

Around her, The Embers: upright bass, brushed drums, muted trumpet, piano. A band that plays the way you sit up through the night with someone you love.

All twenty-three songs on this debut — music and lyrics — are signed Vincent Cespedes, French composer and lyricist. An improbable, obvious meeting: philosophy that swings, a voice that thinks.

“The king is noise. Long live the hush.”

On tour this summer: Sète, Warsaw, Columbus, Baltimore, Lisbon.

Recordless Company announces the release of The Mute, a five-track EP by Shug Ember.

Built around voice, silence, and the suspended space between notes, the record includes a luminous homage to Miles Davis and confirms Shug Ember’s place among the rare singers who turn restraint into fire.

The Mute is out now and available everywhere.

Berlin put my name on a wall.
Grief put his hand on my throat.

I’m coming anyway.
With the band, with the ghosts, with the lake that doesn’t forget.

Don’t clap too soon.
Some songs are still finding a place to land.
