Olde Trace Estates

The name "Olde Trace Estates " was chosen to pay homage to one of the oldest roads in the United States--the historic Old Natchez Trace.

For centuries the route was used by Native Americans as a game trail. By the 1700's traders and highwaymen were making their way south to New Orleans by means of the Mississippi River, where they would sell their goods and even their flatboats and travel back via Natchez and the Trace on foot or on horseback. Many would sew their money and valuables in hidden locations in their saddles or bags to try and avoid detection by the many bandits that hid out along the route.

By the early 1800's, still before Mississippi became a state, the Choctaw and Chickasaw Indians established trading post along the routes. Just south of present day Mathiston, a Choctaw named David Folsom ran a trading post at a location called Pigeon Roost. Folsom eventually became a Choctaw chief. The son of a white father and a Choctaw mother, the Bible was first translated into Choctaw in his home. This location was a famous stopping point--Andrew Jackson and his troops camped just south of Mathiston's present day corporation limits during the War of 1812.

Eventually, however, stream boat travel and better roads throughout Mississippi, which by now had achieved statehood, spelled an end to travel along the historic "Old Trace ". Portions of the Trace simply disappeared into history....others became portions of country roads.

In 1889, William Gideon "Bill" Mathis bought land along the Old Trace and convinced the railroad to build a depot along land he donated to the Georgia Pacific Railroad. The railroad named the location "Mathiston" in his honor. A portion of the Old Trace can still be traveled in the city limits of Mathiston....and hardens back to an era of one of American's most famous routes.
