WTF!? ⚡ When old wiring meets new wiring, things can get interesting!

Today’s inspection uncovered active knob-and-tube wiring connected to newer Romex cable, exposed electrical splices, and a grounding wire that was left disconnected.

All right next to the electrical panel. 😳

Knob-and-tube wiring isn’t automatically unsafe just because it’s old. But exposed connections and improper wiring transitions create real safety concerns.

Just because someone updated part of the wiring doesn’t mean they did it correctly!

Another reason we look beyond what’s visible in the living room.

WTF!? — Another day, another installation masterpiece. 😂

So we installed an attic exhaust fan… but left the shingles underneath it?!

The shingles are literally blocking the opening where the fan is supposed to pull hot air out of the attic. 🤦‍♂️

The whole point of an attic fan is to exhaust hot air and help ventilate the attic.

Kind of hard to do that when the opening is blocked. 😂

I swear, you can’t make this stuff up.

WTF!? — You can’t make this stuff up. 😂

Apparently, reading the installation instructions was optional… so they just left them INSIDE the dryer vent hood. 🤦‍♂️

And to make things even better, there’s a screen covering the exhaust opening!

Here’s the problem. Dryer vents need to exhaust lint and moisture freely. Screens can trap lint, restrict airflow, and create a serious fire hazard.

Add a set of instructions blocking the opening and we’ve got ourselves a real masterpiece. 🔥

The instructions were RIGHT THERE. Literally. 😂

WTF!? — Pre-Drywall Edition 😂

This is exactly why I love getting into a house before the drywall goes up.

The fasteners installed at this joist hanger were undersized and didn’t even pe*****te into the supporting beam behind it.

The hanger is there to transfer the load from the joist into the supporting member. If the specified fasteners aren’t properly installed into that member… we’ve got a problem.

And the best part?

Give it a little more time and drywall would’ve covered the whole thing. 👋

Brand new doesn’t mean perfect.
Inspect it before they hide it.

WTF!? — Episode 5 😂

No one expects you to memorize how to install everything.

But when the manufacturer puts a label RIGHT THERE telling you exactly how to fasten it… maybe we follow the directions? 😂

This attic access specifically calls for a nail through the metal bracket.

What did we get?

Screw. Right next to the directions. 🤦‍♂️

These brackets are part of what supports the attic ladder while someone is climbing it, so the specified fasteners actually matter.

Can’t we follow directions even a little?! 😂

At first glance, this plumbing vent flashing probably looks fine.

Look closer. 👀

The bottom of the flashing is underneath the shingles instead of sitting on top of them.

That gap gives water an opportunity to get around the flashing and underneath the roofing.

Water flows downhill. Your flashing should probably account for that. 😂

Another little detail that can turn into a much bigger problem.

WTF!? — the things I find during inspections that make me stop and look twice.

No one loves a good DIY project more than me. 😂

Broken railing? No problem.

Grab some PVC.
Couple hose clamps.
And while you’re at it… add a grab bar for extra safety. 🤌😂

I’m not sure what aisle at Home Depot this repair came from, but I respect the creativity.

Unfortunately, creativity and a properly secured guard/handrail are two very different things. 😂

WTF!? — Episode 3 😂

Ah yes… my favorite DIY electrical upgrade.

Take some Romex, wire an extension cord end onto it, and boom — hardwired extension cord. 🤦‍♂️

Just because it works doesn’t mean it’s right.

I find some incredible homeowner engineering, but this one deserves a spot in the WTF!? collection. 😂

Brand new. Pre-drywall. And the anchor bolt nuts are just spinning. 👀

These anchor bolts help secure the sill plate to the foundation — so yeah, I’d like the nuts to actually be tight. 😂

This is exactly why I love pre-drywall inspections.

Once the insulation and drywall go up, a lot of what I’m looking at today gets covered and forgotten about.

New construction doesn’t mean perfect. It means inspect it BEFORE they hide it. 🔍🏠
