Good morning. Personal post about a walk down memory lane.
Team WDRB in the Morning broadcasted their last show this week from WDRB World Headquarters at 7th and Muhammad Ali Blvd. The employees will now broadcast the show out of WAVE’s building. Gray Media now owns both stations.
Bottom line is they don’t need two buildings and it’s a cost savings move. I get it, but don’t love it. Why, because I spent some of the best working days of my life in that musty/dusty studio from 2011-2024.
I got to work alongside the BEST people/team ever assembled. (Candyce, Jude, Mike, Keith, Lindsey, Chris, Lexie, Rachel, Amanda). If you don’t mind, I would like to share a few memories that hit me when I was watching the last show from that studio.
The first time I ever met Candyce’s daughter Scarlett was in that studio. The first time I ever met Jude’s kids was in that studio. Mike played basketball against Dr. Dunkenstein and drained a 3. Mike talked about it for two weeks. Keith came up with crazy gameshows that we played and all laughed until our faces hurt. Jude started the Jingle Tree and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Home of the Innocents. I ripped my pants on live tv during a fitness segment. Candyce fell off the news set and we thought she was hurt. She got up laughing. We all laughed at each other and together. My kids and wife got to be there for my last show. The friendships we developed and the times we shared in that studio will forever be one of my greatest assets.
On a more serious note, we were live on the air in that studio when we covered stories that changed Louisville’s landscape forever. The pandemic, social unrest (we had to drive around concrete barriers and show our credentials to get to work), Muhammad Ali’s funeral, a mass shooting, a UPS plane crash, Tripple Crown winners, the death of dear friend John Asher who worked at Churchill Downs, and major changes in UofL sports -- just to name a few.
Change is inevitable, but the change will never erase the memories and feelings we all shared together in that studio. Here’s one cool thing. I got to make/share the memories not only with the team I love dearly, but with the entire Kentuckiana region. We ALL shared those memories together and they will live on forever. (Not written by AI)
Sincerely,
Sterling Riggs
