Sir Richard Branson was just 29 years old when he first bought a private island in the British Virgin Islands, long before becoming the billionaire behind the Virgin Group. In the late 1970s, he purchased 74-acre Necker Island for a reported $180,000 after learning it was for sale. Part of the motivation was to impress Joan Templeman, the woman who would eventually become his wife. What began as an ambitious purchase by a young entrepreneur would later become one of the most recognizable private island properties in the Caribbean.

Branson expanded his island holdings in 2007 by purchasing 125-acre Moskito Island for $15 million. Rather than keeping the entire island exclusively for himself, he eventually developed it into a collection of private residential estates. The island was divided into 10 lots, with ownership shared among nine families, including Branson. The development features luxury villas and shared amenities such as beaches and tennis courts, creating a private community rather than a single enormous estate.

Today, parts of Moskito Island are also available for luxury holiday rentals, allowing visitors to experience the secluded Caribbean setting without owning a property there. Branson's island investments show how his approach to real estate has evolved from a bold purchase in his twenties into a carefully developed luxury destination.
