NOW you can really start to see it. 👀

The transformation at First Presbyterian Church of Portville is taking shape, and this is one of our favorite stages of a restoration project.

What started as aging cedar shake is being replaced with new cedar-style siding designed to preserve the character of this beautiful church while giving the exterior a much-needed refresh.

And when you’re working around stained glass, historic trim, changing rooflines, corners and architectural details like these, this definitely isn’t a “just cover the wall” kind of siding job.

There’s still plenty left to do—the Tyvek is proof of that! 😂—but seeing the finished sections next to the areas still under construction gives you a pretty good idea of where this one is headed.

Old character. New life. And a whole lot of detail work in between.

🔨 PROJECT UPDATE — WHAT’S UNDER THE CEDAR?

One of the reasons we prefer doing a proper tear-off is simple:

You can’t fix what you can’t see.

Once the old cedar shake came off, we were able to get a clear look at the wall beneath it, inspect the existing materials, and prep everything properly before the new siding goes on.

On a building like this, that prep takes a little extra patience — especially around all of the stained-glass windows, corners and architectural details.

The finished siding will be the part everyone notices…

…but this is the part that matters just as much.

✔ Old material removed
✔ Existing wall exposed and inspected
✔ Weather barrier installed
✔ Ready for the next stage

Still a long way to go, but this project is moving right along.

🔨 PROJECT UPDATE

Remember that cedar shake that was starting to look a little like bacon? 🥓😂

Well… the bacon is coming off.

We’re well underway on this siding replacement, and right now we're in one of the most important parts of the project — the part that eventually gets completely covered up.

The old cedar is being removed, the exterior is being prepped and protected, and we're carefully working around all of the stained glass, trim and architectural details that make this building so unique.

You can even see the first sections of the new Brownstone cedar-style siding starting to go up. 👀

There’s still plenty of work ahead, but the transformation has officially begun.

🔨 CURRENT PROJECT

When the cedar shake starts looking a little more like bacon… 🥓 it might be time for an update. 😂

We’re getting started on a siding replacement project at this beautiful church, where years of weather have left the existing cedar shakes curled, warped and showing their age.

And this isn’t exactly your average siding job.

Between the stained glass, detailed trim, multiple elevations, bump-outs and all of the original architectural character, there are a LOT of details to work around — and a lot we want to preserve.

We’ll be sharing this transformation as we go, from the old cedar coming off to the new exterior taking shape.

This porch had reached the point where patchwork repairs were no longer the safe option.
The original structure had significant rot, failing rail sections, soft decking, and movement throughout the staircase and framing.

We tore it down and rebuilt it with:

✔ Pressure-treated framing
✔ Reinforced railing system
✔ New staircase
✔ Fresh lattice skirting
✔ Clean finished trim work
✔ Structural support built for long-term durability

A project like this may look simple from the road, but details matter.
