Fall Pest Checklist: A Little Prevention Goes a Long Way

As temperatures cool, pests start looking for warm, sheltered places to spend the season—and our homes, garages, and storage areas can be especially inviting.

A few simple fall maintenance steps can help keep unwanted visitors outside where they belong. Check doors and windows for gaps, seal cracks and openings, clear away leaves and debris, and keep firewood and stored items away from the home. Don’t forget to check garages, faucets, drains, and food storage areas too.

Taking care of these small items now can help protect your home while also keeping our entire community looking clean, cared for, and ready for the cooler months ahead.

🍁 Use the Fall Pest Checklist as a quick reminder while preparing your home for the season!

As the days gradually get shorter, now is a good time to check your home’s outdoor lighting. Replace burned-out bulbs, clean light fixtures, and make sure porches, walkways, steps, and entryways are well lit.

Good outdoor lighting can make it easier to see after dark, help prevent trips and falls, and create a warm, welcoming entrance to your home.

Take a quick walk around your home after sunset—are there any dark spots that could use a little more light?

Make School Mornings a Little Easier

Now that the school year is in full swing, the excitement of the first few weeks may have given way to the reality of busy mornings! A few simple routines can help families start the day with less stress.

Try preparing as much as possible the night before—lay out clothes, pack backpacks, charge devices, and get lunches or snacks ready. Keep backpacks, shoes, and school essentials in one designated spot so there’s no last-minute search for the missing homework folder.

And don’t underestimate the value of a consistent bedtime and a few extra minutes in the morning. Leaving the house without everyone rushing can make the whole day start a little better.

What’s your best trick for making school mornings run smoothly? Share it with your neighbors!

Getting Your Yard Ready for Fall

Fall may arrive a little differently in the Houston area, but the change of seasons is still a good time to give your landscape some attention. As temperatures gradually ease, homeowners can check irrigation, clean up garden beds, evaluate struggling plants, add mulch where needed, and start thinking about plants better suited to Texas growing conditions.

Texas A&M AgriLife offers helpful, research-based resources for maintaining attractive landscapes while conserving water and choosing plants that can handle Texas conditions.

A Taste of Late Summer
Looking for a delicious way to enjoy some of the season's fresh produce? Okra and tomatoes are a classic Southern combination—and a great way to make the most of late-summer vegetables.

Southern Living's Classic Okra and Tomatoes brings together okra, tomatoes, bell pepper and onion for an old-fashioned side dish that's right at home on a Texas table.

This recipe for okras and tomatoes is cooked low and slow to turn the okra-tomato combo into a near stew. This centuries-old pairing is a remarkable union of late-summer flavors.
