Mortgage Forbearance Could Spark More Financial Woes

From my broker-John Chambers:

In one of our team Zoom calls this week, we discussed forbearance vs deferred payments in regards to mortgage holders that have lost income and are struggling to make mortgage payments. This article discusses forbearance and the potential pitfalls this option might carry. Before anyone signs on for this, it is imperative that they know what happens at the end of the agreement and how missed payments will be treated. It is possible that all missed payments might be due in a lump sum at the end of the period which for most people would not be much of a help assuming that it may take some time to ramp their income back up. Another option is deferred payments where typically the deferred payments are added to the end of the loan.
The final advice is if you can make your payments, make them. But don't be afraid to negotiate with your lender if your situation calls for mortgage relief.

Make sure your clients understand that they may owe missed monthly payments in a lump sum at the end of the forbearance period.
