A reader emailed me at 4:55 this morning with a question I get almost every day about multi-generational homes.

Mom wants to help her buy a home together. But what happens with her siblings when Mom is gone?

Most families assume a parent's estate always has to be split equally. But fair does not always mean equal. And every family gets to decide what fair looks like for them.

That's why I always start with a family conversation. Talk it through together, agree on what feels fair, and then take that agreement to an elder law or estate planning attorney to make it legal and protect everyone. That's who I refer every family to for this part.

What surprises people most? The siblings who live far away are often grateful to the one who stays close to care for their parent.

I also know some families have complicated dynamics and relationships that make these conversations harder. If that's true for you, it's okay to bring in additional support, like a family mediator or counselor, to help you navigate your plans.
