South Carolina has one of the lowest property tax rates in the country.

Realtor.com, citing the Tax Foundation's 2024 data, lists SC's effective property tax rate on owner-occupied homes at 0.49%. That's one of only five states under 0.5%. New Jersey is the highest at 1.88%.

Fun fact: when I looked at the tax bill on our own home, it came out close to 0.5% of its value. How does yours compare?

Your bill depends on your home's value and your county. Primary residences are also taxed at a lower rate than second homes and rentals.

I knew this August was hot in Florence. I didn't realize how hot until I saw the numbers.

Five degrees warmer than last year on average, and the AC put in 100 extra hours to hold the house at 72. Ours is a two-stage system, built to run longer in a lower range instead of full blast at 4 tons all the time, so a big runtime number doesn't necessarily cause concern.

Hartsville today for Emmanuel's swim meet at the YMCA.

We have hit the point in the year where it is hotter and more humid on the pool deck than it is outside. Step out the door and the air feels good again. After a long South Carolina summer, that first cool breath is worth stopping for. Fall is finally on the way.

Started the morning at the Downtown Hartsville Farmer's Market. Second Saturdays, April through October, 9 to 1 on Cargill Way. Parked once, walked all morning, no rush.

Proud of this kid. Good day to be a swim dad.
