Pay off debt first, or save for a home first? Here's how I actually think about it.
There's no single right answer for everybody — but there is a right way to think about it. It isn't simply "debt bad, savings good." It's how that debt affects your whole picture, including your debt-to-income ratio, versus how close you already are to having what you need to move forward. For some buyers one path clears the way; for others it just delays the start.

It's not a mysterious formula, it's the math lenders use to gauge how much additional payment you could reasonably handle on top of what you already owe.
