Roanoke Lookout at Bent Mountain
FOR SALE -- Mountaintop chalet overlooking the Blue Ridge Parkway and Roanoke Valley.
For someone who loves high places, natural settings and forested outdoors, and ever-changing vistas, this property is magical. Many people choose to live on Bent Mountain because of the climate. At an elevation above 2800 feet, summer temperatures rarely rise above 80 degrees. Low summertime temperatures plus low humidity and cool breezes make Bent Mountain an ideal retreat or home for the family. This chalet-style home was designed and built in 1965 by a soldier who served in Europe during WWII and married a German nurse. After settling in Roanoke, they built this home like the one in Bavaria where she had grown up. This property has many one-of-a-kind features. The home is built on a prominence on Bent Mountain formed by Back Creek. The prominence provides a 240-degree vista overlooking Back Creek Cascade, the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Roanoke Valley. The vista sweeps from Mason's Knob to Poor Mountain, and includes many other mountain tops such as Smith Mountain, Mill Mountain, Peaks of Otter, Read Mountain, Twelve O'Clock Knob and Tinker Mountain. The home is of post and beam construction with cathedral ceilings varying in height from 13 to 18 feet. The massive floor-to-ceiling fireplace is of cut and chipped Indiana limestone, and has been converted to gas logs. The floors are natural wood or tile. The floor in the den is random with pegged blond oak. The floor in the large (19x24) sunroom is tiled with 20-inch Italian porcelain. The stairway to the loft is open and made of black walnut. Walls are random-width cedar planks. There are redundant heating systems including the wood stove and gas heaters which can be used without electrical service. The wood stove can be used not only for heating but also for cooking. There is a 550-gallon cistern tank which can be used for water in case of loss of electrical service. This home has quick access to US Highway 221 and is only 10 miles to the usual conveniences such as grocery and hardware stores, pharmacies, and restaurants. There are fruit trees, flower and vegetable gardens with perennials such as asparagus, strawberries, blueberries, red and black raspberries. Perennial flowers include many varieties of iris, lilies, hollyhocks, and more. The property of 5.25 acres has many possibilities such as building another house with a great view, an addition with master suite and eat-in kitchen or converting the two-story 12x16 barn (built in 2014) into a guest cottage. As of this coming winter, we will have owned this home for 40 years. During this time it has been a place of joy and delight. We hope the new owners with love it as much as we have.
