Austin summers can push attic temperatures to around 140°F. Your insulation is what keeps that heat out of the rooms below.

That's why attic insulation matters so much here. Here's a quick check you can do from the attic hatch with a flashlight.

Look across the attic floor. If the insulation sits level with or below the wood floor joists, so you can easily see them, ENERGY STAR says you probably need more.

For Austin's climate zone (zone 2), ENERGY STAR's insulation chart says to add about R-49 if your attic is uninsulated, or add about R-38 if you already have 3 to 4 inches.

Check the edges too. Insulation often runs thin out near the eaves even when the middle looks fine.

One safety note: if you see gray, pebbly, flaky insulation (it may be vermiculite), don't touch it until it's been tested.

Myth: closing vents in unused rooms saves you money.

It sounds logical: shut the vents in rooms you don't use, and your AC stops cooling them, so you save. But your duct system is set up to move a certain amount of air.
Fact: it doesn't, and it can throw your home's air pressure out of balance.

Ever wonder how a blower door test works?

A blower door test shows how much air leaks in and out of a house. Here's the simple version:
1. A big fan goes into an outside door frame
2. The fan pulls air out of the house, so outside air gets pulled in through any gaps and cracks
3. We measure how much air that takes
The leakier the house, the more air the fan has to move. It's a simple way to see how tight a home is, so you're not guessing.

Myth: a bigger AC is always better.

It's easy to think more power means more comfort. But an AC that's too big for your home can cool in short bursts and shut off, which can leave a house feeling a little clammy.
Fact: what matters is the right fit for your home, along with ducts that deliver the air where it's supposed to go.

Wondering if your AC is the right fit for your home? Message us or give us a call.

Where does your cooled air really go?

Your AC cools the air, then your ducts carry it to your rooms. If the ducts have gaps or loose connections, some of that air can leak out along the way, sometimes into a hot attic. Here's how duct leakage gets measured:
1. Cover the vents
2. Pressurize the ducts with a test fan
3. Measure how much air leaks out
That way you're not guessing about your ducts.

Round Rock and Leander: Your 2000s Home Needs Attention

Many homes built in Round Rock and Leander between 2000-2010 meet code but not efficiency standards. Common issues we find:

• R-19 attic insulation (should be R-38 minimum)
• Flexible ductwork with numerous bends
• Minimal air sealing during construction
• Single-pane windows in some areas

These homes can be efficient with targeted improvements. The audit shows you exactly what to prioritize.
