Downtown Sugar Hill's biggest weekend of the year is back. The Sugar Rush Arts Festival returns Saturday and Sunday, October 17–18, with vendor booths, live art demonstrations, a juried art show, and a brand-new Kids Zone with a petting zoo, gem mining, and food trucks.

The weekend actually kicks off a day early with a free concert Friday, October 16 at 7 p.m. at The Bowl at Sugar Hill — bring a chair or blanket. It's one of several free things to do around Gwinnett this week, alongside a Night Market in Lawrenceville and a Fall Nature Scavenger Hunt at Rhodes Jordan Park.

Gwinnett County held two public sessions this fall on the future of the Maguire-Livsey Family Big House — a 190-year-old farmhouse in Snellville whose history runs from an 1830s plantation to nearly a century of ownership by the Livsey family, who bought it in 1926.

Robert and Morena Livsey raised 13 children on the property, farmed it, and later sold it to the county in 2017 specifically for historic preservation. This fall's meetings gathered resident input on how the restoration should honor both chapters of the site's history.

Gwinnett County opened applications Oct. 1 for its H.O.P.E. grant program — about $1.9 million in opioid settlement funds for nonprofits, faith groups, and community organizations working on prevention, treatment, recovery support, and harm reduction.

Applications are due November 30, with a virtual info session set for November 10. If you run or volunteer with a group doing this kind of work, now's the time to look into it.

A new spot just joined the Peachtree Corners restaurant scene 🍽️

Darchin Mediterranean Cuisine cut the ribbon on Wednesday, October 14, at Suite 860, 5005 Peachtree Parkway — capping off about a month of hiring servers and bartenders for the new full-service restaurant.

It joins a corridor that's been busy lately: Persian spot Golestan and Japanese restaurant Sei Ryu both opened at The Forum Peachtree Corners earlier this year, and food hall Politan Row added taco concept I Love Tacos.

The Gwinnett Chamber has logged several ribbon cuttings recently, a reminder that the county's small-business pipeline keeps producing new openings well beyond any single corridor.

Bach to Rock opened a full-service music school at 3455 Peachtree Industrial Blvd in Duluth this summer, then had the City of Duluth out for an official ribbon cutting in September. Here's what it teaches, who runs it, and why it's worth knowing for Gwinnett families.

The City Bodega Café marked a relaunch on Grayson Highway in Lawrenceville — a Gwinnett Chamber ribbon cutting on October 1 for the family-owned breakfast and brunch spot owned by Monica and Craig Philip.

Shrimp and grits, salmon croquettes, French toast, and cheesesteaks, built on the Philips' Virginia, Charleston, and New York roots. Open Wednesday through Sunday, Suite A at 1417 Grayson Highway.

Beyond the counter, their elevated brunch series runs the third Sunday of most months at Gran Palais Banquet Hall in Lawrenceville — buffet, cocktails, live music, and a DJ.
