President Trump signed an executive order Thursday aimed at lowering the cost of owning a home.
Mortgage insurance: The order directs the Federal Housing Finance Agency to set up a pilot in which Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac regularly check home values, identify borrowers who appear to have enough equity to drop their mortgage insurance, and notify them. It also calls for cutting paperwork and appraisal hurdles. The pilot covers mortgages made after it launches.
VA and USDA: The Agriculture and Veterans Affairs secretaries are told to lower interest rates on home loans their departments make directly.
Refinancing: An existing pilot that lets some refinances skip a lender's title insurance would become a permanent nationwide program, with savings passed on to borrowers.
The order also creates a task force to make factory-built homes cheaper.
