Second grade studied popcorn this week. We read that the Pilgrims ate popcorn with cream for breakfast, so we tried it! The vote was 4 to 2 in favor of this surprisingly tasty snack! We planted 4 types of corn in a clear glass, so we can watch as the corn germinates and the roots develop. Students also took home their strawberry plants, along with instructions on where and how to plant them.

Mrs. Steele's 2nd graders read 2 books this week about tomatoes - one fiction and one non- fiction. Then we made text-to-text connections using the 2 books. After that, we made some comparisons of our own, trying fresh tomato salsa and freezer salsa, made with tomatoes from Mrs. Steele's 2014 garden. We decided the fresh salsa was hotter and the freezer salsa reminded us of tacos!

Title wants to say a big "Thanks" to all of the parents who attended our Parent/Title-Teacher Conferences last Thursday. It was good to hear how you are working with your child at home. Remember, keep reading to your child as well as having them read to you. Have fun talking about the stories as you read to each other. There are still a few conferences we will be having in the near future. So if you didn't receive anything about last week's conferences we didn't forget you. Mrs. Steele's Title 1 groups began a unit on gardening this week. Tomorrow we will be planting radishes and hope to harvest them before the end of the year! We've been reading lots of books about seeds and plants and growing things. Kdg worked on sequence with the steps involved in planting seeds. 1st grade found the main idea in the book City Garden. And 2nd grade used Today's Meet on their iPads to define big words like germination and pollination. This unit is made possible by a grant from the Madison County Master Gardeners. Thank you so much MCMG! Watch for updates on all our growing plants and our activities as we CULTIVATE YOUNG READERS through gardening!
