ALDERSON FIREWORKS POSTPONED

The Winter Solstice Celebration including fireworks planned for Alderson tonight from 6-8 p.m. has been postponed due to the bad weather. The current plan is to have the celebration and fireworks on New Year’s Eve with details to be announced later.

However, the light shows in Alderson will still be available tonight. Bring your guests for a walk around Santaland and enjoy the moving lights and music of the Santaland Express Train. Enjoy a drive under the dancing lights of the Alderson Memorial Bridge (since there will be no fire pits on the bridge) hosted by the Alderson Youth Football League from 6-8 p.m. Some shops will be open late.

Additional opportunities for a “drive under the lights” include Saturday from 6-8 hosted by the Alderson Volunteer Fire Department and on Sunday from 6-8 hosted by the National Guard. Enjoy the drive and donate what you can to these wonderful non-profit organizations.

Reason for the Season

In this land of freedom ringing,
Everyone is celebrating the season,
Hearing groups of carolers singing,
Reminding people of the celebration’s reason.

Celebrating the birth of our Savior,
In a manger so very long ago,
The Son of our beloved Creator,
From Him whom all our blessings flow.

For on this night in a land far away,
The King in the stable was born,
Destined to sacrifice for our sins to pay,
Wearing his painful crown of thorns.

For on the cross He was hung,
Till life was at an end,
With prayers for all on his tongue,
To our Father in Heaven He did send.

To atone for all the sins of generations to be,
He suffered and died on the cross,
He hung for all to see,
That if you believe in him you will not be lost.

So rejoice in His merciful love for all,
That He died for all our sins,
Join with Him in that Great Hall,
Where your life with Him will begin.

So Christmas is a time for love,
To everyone that hear His call,
Send your praise to Him above,
To have Salvation for us all.

Thanksgiving

This is the time of year we pause, if only for a moment, to give thanks for our home, family, jobs and friends. Even people that don’t have any of these things can still find something to be thankful for. We give thanks for our country from the shores of one great ocean to the shores of another and all the wonders in between. We give thanks for the love we have whether it be spouses or children or even some very special friends. We give thanks for the opportunity to have a good meal with our loved ones where laughter and sometimes tears can be seen.
Yes, we give thanks. What are you giving thanks for this year? Think that over and if it involves a person let them know how much you appreciate them and all they do for you.
My hope is that all in this country where we celebrate this holiday and all of the others across this world we all share will have all they wish for.
Happy Thanksgiving to us all.

The Fall Bash Health Fair was a success. Several people got their flu shots and there were representatives there from Rainelle Medical Center, Transamerica Insurance, Amedisys Home Health and Shepherds Center of Greenbrier Valley. All provided information on the services and programs they offered and also handed out literature and treats. Here are some pics.

Aldersonians and those who pass through or commutes please take note and share:

Beginning Monday, September 10th, at 0630 we will begin with more flood repair and mitigation making Alderson better.

With progress comes the need for patience. Between Lee Street and Virginia Street on Riverview Drive will require temporary stop lights to facilitate trenches going to the river for new storm drains. This work will be done simultaneously so traffic is tied up the least possible.

However, the areas from Linden Avenue heading South towards the river on Virginia Street and Lee Street will be completely blocked North and South to facilitate the new drain lines. As soon as possible, the Lee Street blockage will be opened, the Virginia Street will continue moving North as the drains are completed and connected.

Please allow extra time for delays as you travel through the construction area and make note of the road closures for your safety and the crews who are working hard for us all.

Some things to remember:
1. We are early into storm predictions. And there are no certainties right now.
2. If Virginia is hit hard gasoline and diesel supplies can be disrupted. Fill up the cars and cans.
3. Be prepared for 72 hours on your own. Food and water.
4. If you use home oxygen get your full cylinders from your supplier now, not later.
5. We have our backup generator for Water to be delivered Wednesday to make sure we continue to produce water.
6. Our staff has topped tanks and supplies. You should as well.
7. Take some cash out of the ATM machine in case of power outages.
9. Take pictures of your home now prior to flooding or damages for insurance help later.
10. Don’t wait to think about your plan of action.
11. Move the campers and cars before Thursday evening so you are not caught by surprises.

Be safe. Plan and pray. We will keep you updated as available.

PACK YOUR BAGS FOR ALDERSON

Ok, so it may not be so far away but Alderson Main Street is offering a fabulous mini-getaway to this charming town.

It will be an evening in Alderson they will never forget for the winning ticket holder and 5 of their family and friends. The drawing for this great prize will be held on September 2nd and the winner notified by phone.

Included in this wonderful package is accommodation for 6 at the Historic Old Victorian Inn in Alderson on October 19th. Imagine yourself sitting in the parlor of the Inn enjoying hors d’oeuvres and good conversation prior to being served a gourmet dinner in the beautifully appointed dining room.

The gourmet dinner will be prepared by “Chef” Rich Lohmeyer, a local Pastor who has quite a reputation in the area as a great cook. He started cooking back on the farm with his Mom, and helped pay his way through Seminary by working in the kitchen and cooking. He loves to read cook books and is always ready to try new recipes. He has been auctioned off as a “Chef” many times for fund raisers at his churches; cooked for Oktoberfest at two churches; prepared corned beef and cabbage St. Patrick's Day dinners several times; and was a part of the “Men Who Cook” fundraiser for Communities in Schools this year. Lohmeyer’s idea of relaxing is to cook a huge meal with new recipes, although nothing is ever too complicated or takes too long. Soups are a specialty.

After a good night’s rest in the comfy private bedrooms, there will be a scrumptious breakfast at the Inn. Then it will be time for shopping as the winner will receive gift certificates for shopping at local merchants: $25.00 from Alderson’s Store, $25.00 from the Artisan’s Gallery, $25.00 from Bridgewalk Shops and a gift basket from Sunset Berry Farms.

Tickets are available at the shops and Visitor’s Center in Alderson or by calling 304-445-7348. Tickets are available for a donation of $5.00 each or five tickets for $20.00. All proceeds from the raffle will be go to the many projects of Alderson Main Street whose mission is to further the economic development of the Town of Alderson by improving the appearance of the town, fostering tourism and marketing the town and its businesses.
